Today's meeting was educational. The Greenville Rotary Club was honored with several of the surrounding School Districts Educational Foundations members. We had representatives from Quinlan, Boles Home, Commerce, Lone Oak Caddo Mills and Wolfe City. They share with the club how the Educational Foundations are serving students, teachers and each district. President Duane Gaulden and incoming President Coleen Smith, presented a check to each foundation to help them help others.

Michelle Carter, Carevide Chief Executive Officer, presented to the Greenville Rotary Club. Carevide, a Community Health Center, was establihed in 1977 in Greenville, Texas and has facilities located in Bonham, Commerce, Cooper, Farmersville, Greenville, Kaufman and Sulphur Springs. They provide family medicine, womens health, pediatrics, school-based healthcare and dental services.

Tom Darte, retired general manager for the Greenville Electrical Utlity System, was our guest speaker today. Tom explained how regulated and deregulated energy effected both the consumers and the producers. He spoke to how a regulated energy market provided a surplus to help in building new power plants and the current electricity only plan we have gave consumers he ability to search for the best cost, but left us with a lack of reinvestment in the energy producing facilities.
Micah McBay, Venue/Tourism Manager for the City of Greenville provided an enlightning program to the club Wednesday, the upcoming Total Eclipse of the Hearts event. Greenville has a weekend of fun planned leading up to the eclipse.

The guest speaker for the noon meeting was Brian Toole, Director of County Development. Brian gave us an overview of the various duties of his office that include policies, permits, regualtions, engineering, and development of RV - tiny home communities and housing developments in Hunt County.

Colonel Gerald Kichan (RET.) spoke to the Greenville Rotary club about his book, From Saddle to Parachute. The book, a photo-biography provides glimpses into the military service of Polish officer CPT. Jerzy Z. Fijalkowski-Bereda, who started as a cavalry cadet officer assigned to the Warsaw Mechanized Brigade and ended his service as one of the highest decorated soldiers of the 1st. Polish Independent Parachute Brigade.

The guest speaker for the meeting was the Greenville Tourism Manager, Stacy Foley. Stacy shared several local attractions that draw people from all over to visit Greenville. A couple she shared were the Audie Murphy Museum/American Cotton Museum, Kety Tree Farm and the Farmers Market.

Lt. Col. Choya Shanahan, TX 645 Commander of the Civil Air Patrol was our guest speaker for the meeting. Lt. Col. shanahan shared several of the benifits and training available to the cadets from flying, search & rescue training, team building to an avenue to making friends. Civil Air Patrol cadets range from 12 yrs to 19 yrs old, meeting one a week for 2 hours and one Saturday a month. There is also opportunity for adults to join CAP as a volunteer and you could help in search & rescue, aviation, become a metor to the youth.

Kathy Allred, member of the Parks City Rotary club, spoke to the Grreenville Rotary club about the Rotary International Conventions. The upcoming convention will be held in Singapore. She shared how much fun you have and how motivated you are when you return home. Kathy has made 15 international conventions during her time in Rotary and said the the opening and closing ceremonies were a must see.

Sebastian Gonzales of the Greenville ISD Iron Lions presented to the club at the noon meeting. The GHS Solar Car Team students create car from scratch, no kit builds here. The have plans to compete in Australia in 2025 at the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge. Many students that have been a part of the program have gone on to have careers the the STEM Fields. (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathmatics) Advisors for the Solar Car Program are Joel Pitts, Lucas Kiowski & George Kroncke.

Bill O'Neal, author and Texas Historian, with over 35 published books to his credit. A few of his books are: The Encylopedia of Western Gun Fighters, Frontier Forts of Texas, 1830 Citizens of Texas: A Genealogy, Brick Book Best of the West and the John S. "Rip" Ford Texian Hero. Bill shared with the club some the stories about Rip Ford. He came to Texas from Tennessee as a young physician, was the owner-editor of several Texas newspapers, mayor of Austin and Brownsville and even elected to the State of Texas's leislative bodies and the Lone Star Republic. Rip Ford was a bold, fearless combat leader, an expert pistoleer, and a master tactician who led hard-hitting cavalry charges against foes with far greater numbers.

Pud Kearns spoke to the Greenville Texas Rotary Club about the upcoming Bras For the Cause event scheduled for October 12, 2023. She gave a brief history of the event from it's very humble beginnings to the special event it has grown into today. The event now going into it's 15 year, has raised over one million dollars.

Dr. Jeffrey Nelson shared with the Greenville Rotary Club about the new technology and advancements in dentistry that are avalable today. Dr. Nelson said that not only were these advancements more accurate but made the patients procedures recovery quicker and less painful.

Hunt Regional Medical Center presented to the Greenville Rotary Club about Heart Health. Several risk factors that were mentioned to the club were lack of excercise, smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, negative emotions and excessive weight.

Kim Quimby, Greenville Rotary International chair, spoke to the club about traveling today. She suggested that everyone be patient, whether you are driving or by air. Kim suggested that you should try to fly as early in the morning as possible, but be prepared to bring snacks, most food services may not be opened. Some of the US locations that Kim suggested that are good travel destinations are Santa Fe, NM, Charleston and Savannah GA, and the Napa Valley.

The club was given an update to the Longhorn Arena and Events Center located in Greenville, Texas. The center holds clinics, equine therepy, barrel racing, sorting and roping events and recently was the host for the USPCA Region 20 Field Trials. Hunt County District Attoney, Noble Walker, presented to the Greenville Rotary club on Wednesday about the duties of the District Attorneys office. Mr. Walker explained how felony cases were brought to their office by County law enforcement and the grand jury.

Greg Sims, President of Greenville Board of Development, presented a talk about the growth of our community. Did you know there are nearly 8000 planned homesites already for 2022.
Gary Woodall, meteorologist and member of the Disaster Defense Alliance, presented to the Greenville Rotary Club about Hazardous Weather Awareness and Preparedness. Gary explained to the club about the differences between a weather watch and a weather warning. A weather watch is issued when conditions are favorable for hazardous weather, cover a large area, valid for roughly six hours and this is time to monitor the weather developments. A weather warning is issued when hazardous weather has been reported by spotters or indicated on radar, valid for the portions of counties near the storm's path, usually valid for one hour or less and it's time to take action.

Members of the Greenville Rotary club recently traveled to Cozumel to visit and do service projects with our sister club, Club Rotario Cozumel. The Greenville and Cozumel Rotary club's along with members of the community helped to build and plant several raised gardens. Club members Kim Quimby, David Weiland and Larry Mays shared stories of the trip and the success of the service project. Katy Ridge met with local community leaders to discuss Human Trafficking as a service project for January's Human Trafficking Awareness month.

Roger Ratliff, former pastor at Van Sickle Baptist Church and Polio Survivor spoke to the Greenville Rotary Club about his life and how polio changed him. The Texas Scottish Rite Hospital became his home away from home for the next 10 years. While in the hospital parents could only visit on Sunday's and while you were in surgery. He shared that in those days male patients were in a ward together. This forced all of them to rely on each other until the next Sunday when parents would arrive for a visit. The Bob Wills fiddle Festival has been held for that past 7 years in Downtown Greenville this years event will be held October 29th. & 30th. The Big Ball in G-Town dinner & street dance will begin at 6pm on Friday the 29th. This is a free event to the pulic but you will need to bring a lawn chair for seating at the Farmers Market. Saturdays outdoor events begin at 10 am and run to 5 pm on the Lee Street Stage and the Fiddle showcase will be nextdoor to the Texan Theater. There will be an indoor concert held at the GMA @ 7pm. Dr. Bobby Sparks author, pastor, and lecturer for 40 years shared many of the artifacts he has in his collection with the Rotary club on Wednesday. Dr. Sparks received his Doctor of Theology Diploma from Texas Baptist Institute in Henderson, Texas. He has traveled throughout the United States and foreign countries, lecturing on the Old Testament Tabernacle, the Law of Moses, and Israel.

Tray Soto, A Greenville High School Senior, is recognized as the September Student of the Month by the Greenville Rotary Club. Presenting Tray his certificate is Rotary President, Debbie Sickels along with Early College High School Chancellor, De'Andre Carter.
The class of 2022 is the first to graduate the program and Tray will receive and A.S. in Engineering along with his HS diploma.
Tray holds a 4.0 GPA at PJC and is ranked in the top 15 of his class at GHS, where he is apart of the Superintendent Student Advisory Council, the GECHS Student Advisory Board, and the National Honor Society
He plans to attend UT-Austin or TAMUC Honoros Program and Major in Engineering.

Dennisha Denny, host of the Heart of Greenville, spoke to the club about her show Heart of Greenville. Dennisha is a member of the Greenville Rotary Club and Broker/Owner of RE/Max 3D Real Estate in Greenville, Royse City and Farmersville. She host a Heart of Greenville, Heart of Royse City and a Heart of Farmersville, each of these can been seen on her youtube channel REMAX 3D Real Estate. She chooses not to interview but to simply have a conversation with the guest. District Governor Max Duplant visited the Greenville Rotary Club and shared with the club her goals and the mission of Rotary International. President Debbie Sickels presented a check in the amount of $500 to the District Govenor for Polio Plus.

Did you know that GEUS has a service territory of 97 square miles, had 525 miles of overhead distribution lines and 55 miles of underground distribution lines?
Marjorie Lewis spoke to the Greenville Rotary Club about her career as a journalist covering the Dallas Cowboys. Marjorie authored a book, When the Men Were Gone, a novel based on the true story of a woman, Tylene Wilson, who coached football in Brownwood, Texas. She not only authored a book about a female football coach but she too was a football coach. Marjorie had a passion and understanding for the game and after researching and writing her book she coached football for Texas Wesleyan University.

President Larry James presented a check to Remember For Me board members Melva Hill and Kasey Smith. Kasey spoke to the club about the organization and many of there events and programs they offer to caregivers. Melva presented on the topic "The Stigma of Dementia & Alzheimer's" She provided four areas of the Stigma that people experience (Denial, Shame, Guilt & Fear) and how we can support a friend or loved one that is experiencing signs of The Stigma of Dementia & Alzheimer's.

John Dixon with the Greenville Board of Development shared with the club the submission process a new potential business for the city would submit. The interest in the Greenville area has been very active in the first quarter of the year. The Board of Development is doing a great job and attracting new companies and increasing jobs for the City and surrounding community.
Rebecca Jowers, Exceutive director of the Poiema Foundation, spoke to the Greenville Rotary club about Human Trafficking. The Poiema Foundation works to educate the public and raise awareness in order to prevent sexual abuse, sex trafficking, and other methods of sexual exploitation. They also provide a safe place including trauma-informed care for those who have been trafficked and are on their journey from victim to survivor.

David Weiland, presents a plaque's of appreciation to sponsors of the Cotton Patch Challenge. This ride had it's challenges with health requirement restrictions, but was a total success for 2020. We are looking forward to celebrating with an even larger event with the 25th anniversary ride, scheduled for September 18, 2021. Past President, Katy Ridge speaks to the director's of CASA, WIN and CAC about the Rotary Convention that was held over the past weekend April 23rd. & 24th. Katy was able to collect and have the club distribute the toy's to the Children's Advocacy Center, Women In Need and CASA of Hunt County. The benefit of this project will be be measured in smiles.

Kevin Banks, Venue/Tourism manager and GMA Manager provided the club with all that was going on with the GMA over the past year. Kevin said that very few shows had been cancelled many of the artist and events had re-scheduled for a different date. There were several events held at the GMA since March 2020, but were limited to the seating capacity in the auditorium due to Covid protocols. Tourism has shown to increase over the past months helping our community's shopping and restaurants. Plan your schedule for some of the upcoming concerts and shows, like the musical Newsies, concerts by John Conlee, Crystal Gayle, Mickey Gilley, The Gatlins and the Dallas Symphony. 
Dennis Prentice and his wife Sharon, presented to the club about the beautiful Casa Sharona located in Cozumel. They have owned the condominium since 2015 and have donated a weeks stay in October to help the Rotary Clubs of Cozumel and Greenville. The club also was given the locals view of best places to dive, snorkel, eat or just hang out and watch the sunsets. Women In Need Executive Director, Jeff Landers, spoke to the Greenville Rotary at the noon meeting. Mr. Landers shared with the club several of the services provided - 24 hour hotline, emergency shelter, legal advocacy, counseling services and prevention education. You can get involved by volunteering, donate items to My Sister's Closet, shop at one of the four My Sister's Closet locations, Greenville, Quinlan, Commerce and Rockwall or you can make a donation on their website www.wintexas.org.

Regina Gasaway has been teaching for 35 years and is now a kindergarten teacher for GISD. She was our Rotary Teacher of the Month for February.

David Weiland presents a plaque recognizing Staff Sergeant Marvin Denney, for meritorious service to our county. Staff Sergeant Denny joined the military at a very young age. He served in Vietnam and was part of the 4th Aviation Division that was attached to the 4th Infantry Division. During his time in the military he was awarded several metals, Vietnam Air Metal, Good Conduct Metal, Humanitarian Metal and a Purple Heart to name a few. Staff Sergeant Denny was shot down three times in one month while flying missions in Vietnam. This is true Service Above Self. Thank you Mr. Denney for your 23 years of service to our country. You are a True American Patriot!

Greenville Noon Rotary was delighted to hear from the latest RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) participants during our August 9th meeting!
The Rotary District 5810 had a successful International Project visit to CAM Laboral (Centro De Attencion Multiple). This is a school for children ages 12-18 (some older because they are allowed to stay) who have multiple attention or sensory problems, like blindness, deafness, autism, and many other issues.
